The wider objective of the project was to provide support to the Water Management and WASH sector in Benin while setting up a vast programme including support to state-actors, non-state actors, and technical assistance to the programme.
The specific objectives within the technical assistance part was to provide international and national experts for support to state-actors like municipalities, water agencies in order to help all actors in the sector to deal with water management and WASH, including in their municipalities, and to ensure the sustainable impact of the OmiDelta programme.
VNG International has provided two long term national Technical Assistants supporting local governments in Bénin in the field of water and sanitation; furthermore two benchmarking exercises were carried out in which 36 municipalities compared their achievements in the WASH sector with the aim to capatalise on knowledge development; backstopping from VNG HQ on benchmarking methodology and local government capacity building.
The results of the project are the implementation of a Delta Plan, strengthening capacities of the Water Directory (DGEau) in the field of Water Management, and a strong water research agency is set in place; and strengthened capactities of actors related to WASH, including members of the water agencies, municipalities, civil society and the private sector. VNG International contributed to the municipal capacity strengthening.
