VNG International invites you to explore its global projects and programmes. In collaboration with local governments, communities, civil society, the private sector, national governments, and other stakeholders, we strive to share expertise and implement initiatives that foster better futures for all. By supporting local governments as enduring institutions, we act as catalysts, empowering them to lead decision-making and shape a brighter future for their citizens.

    This programme is part of PLATFORMA, a European network where municipalities, regions, and their associations collaborate on international cooperation, decentralisation and the SDGs.

    PLATFORMA’s second phase strengthened cooperation between European and partner-country local governments through SDG exchange, advocacy, peer learning and decentralised cooperation.

  • Policy Advice to Dutch Municipalities and the VNG on International Cooperation 2022

    This project helped Dutch municipalities engage with international cooperation and global agendas. It provided access to knowledge, networks and good practices and supported municipalities in applying global goals locally.

    This project supports decentralisation in Tunisia by strengthening local institutions, improving public services, and helping municipalities better plan, manage resources and work with citizens.

  • Programme de Participation Citoyenne aux Politiques Publiques au Bénin pour le Développement Economique Local (PartiCiP au DEL)

    Duration: Start October 15, 2021 till December 31, 2024
    Promoted faster local economic development by linking participatory democracy and transparent, inclusive governance at the municipal level. This helps municipalities respond better to community needs and supports sustainable local development.

  • Projet d’appui à la Synergie Locale pour l’Eau

    Country: Benin
    Field of expertise: Developing Sustainable and Resilient Cities and Communities
    Duration: Start December 19, 2018 till June 12, 2022
    This project advanced integrated water management by connecting local actors. It brings communities, authorities and organisations together to improve flood management, strengthen climate resilience and involve people directly in solutions that affect their daily lives.

  • Projet de Modernisation de l’Administration Foncière au Bénin (PMAF)

    Duration: Start December 1, 2018 till June 30, 2023
    The PMAF project contributed to land security in Benin through a modern national cadastre and sustainable land administration systems. By making land ownership more transparent and reliable, it helps reduce conflict and supports sustainable development.

  • Projet de Préparation de la Mise à l’Échelle du Cadastre national (PPMEC) au Bénin

    Benin’s PPMEC project scales up a national digital cadastre, strengthening land tenure security, supporting investment and building capacity for effective, inclusive land management.

  • Projet de sensibilisation des chefs coutumiers du Sud Kivu pour la redynamisation de la CCRCC au niveau provincial et local

    Country: Democratic Republic of the Congo
    Field of expertise: Dealing with Conflict, Fragility and Migration
    Duration: Start October 1, 2023 till May 31, 2024
    The mission revitalised and operationalised a provincial framework for resolving customary conflicts by strengthening cooperation between customary authorities, public institutions and civil society.

  • Public Finance Reform for SDGs and Domestic Revenue Mobilisation (Reforme)

    The Reforme project supports sound financial governance in Benin by aligning national and local budgets with transparent, SDG-based statistical reporting.

  • Realizing Alliances with Citizen Assemblies

    Country: Turkey
    Field of expertise: Involving Citizens in Decision Making
    Duration: Start November 1, 2020 till November 1, 2022
    The overall objective of the project was to contribute to enhanced local governance in Turkey through improved procedural participation process and participatory decision-making methods.

  • Reconstruction support to St Maarten, St Eustatius and Saba

    Country: Sint Maarten
    Field of expertise: Developing Sustainable and Resilient Cities and Communities
    Duration: Start October 1, 2017 till June 30, 2021
    Dutch municipalities and VNG International supported a post-hurricane recovery project that enhanced disaster preparedness, resilience and rebuilt institutions.

  • Rwanda, Inclusive Decisions At Local Level (IDEAL)

    Country: Rwanda
    Field of expertise: Involving Citizens in Decision Making
    Duration: Start January 1, 2017 till December 31, 2021
    The IDEAL programme supported six growing Rwandan cities in dealing with the challenges brought by rapid urbanisation. By closely involving local citizens in this process, we ensure that their needs are reflected in policies and services developed to address these challenges.

  • Shiraka-Initiative pour des municipalités efficaces, inclusives et prospères

    Duration: Start October 1, 2019 till December 31, 2021
    Strengthens municipalities within Algeria’s decentralisation process. By supporting local governance and integrated territorial development, the project helps local governments respond to challenges and unlock sustainable, balanced development.

  • Social Accountability Program 3

    Country: Ethiopia
    Field of expertise: Involving Citizens in Decision Making
    Duration: Start January 1, 2019 till November 30, 2024
    By institutionalising social accountability, the programme enabled citizens and local governments to jointly assess basic services, agree on improvements and integrate these into local planning and budgeting.

  • Solid waste management support to the government of St Maarten

    Country: Sint Maarten
    Field of expertise: Improving Access to Basic Services
    Duration: Start March 4, 2022 till December 31, 2023
    This project supported St Maarten’s post-Irma recovery by strengthening waste management through technical assistance, reforms and implementation support.

  • Somalia, Inclusive Decisions At Local Level (IDEAL)

    Country: Somalia

    Duration: Start January 1, 2017 till December 31, 2021
    The IDEAL programme supports Somaliland’s local governments and the Association of Local Government Authorities of Somaliland (ALGASL) to strengthen local governance and resilience to climate and development challenges.

    SDLG Somalia promotes local economic development by supporting cooperation among local authorities, youth and marginalized groups.
