Integrated Water Resources Management

VNG International empowers local governments to ensure healthy, safe, and socially equitable living conditions, particularly on lands facing climate and water-related risks. Our expertise spans a wide range of water-related challenges, including enhanced WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) service delivery, flood risk management, water authority strengthening, and integrated water resource management. Some of the key strengths we bring to this sector include:

  • Sustainability of Water Infrastructure: We emphasize the long-term maintenance and functionality of water points and infrastructure, ensuring ongoing access to clean water.
  • Disaster risk management: We provide targeted support to local governments and utilities, enhancing their abilities in disaster risk management related to water.
  • Strategic Development: Our work includes assisting in the formulation of local and regional water management strategies, ensuring tailored solutions to address unique environmental challenges.
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement: We engage local communities actively in water management and disaster response, fostering resilience through awareness programs on water pricing, and clarifying the roles of local governments and communities.
  • Coordination and Awareness: Our expertise extends to stakeholder and donor coordination, ensuring a harmonized approach to water management and sustainable outcomes.

Through these initiatives, VNG International builds the capacity of local governments to lead effectively in managing water resources and mitigating climate risks, ultimately contributing to healthier, more resilient communities.

Local governments have a pivotal role to play in mitigating and adapting to the challenges resulting from climate change and will be the first to experience the operational impact. Next to that, In many countries around the world, local governments have mandates in relation to water, sanitation, safety, and climate. VNG International supports local governments in strengthening their capacity around these topics related to water security and water safety for people and ecosystems.

The aim is that local governments and their representative bodies will be able to deliver on their agreements and execute policies to manage healthy, safe and social equal lives for all on lands with climate and water-related risks. VNG International’s expertise around water is broad, ranging from improved WASH service delivery to flood risk management, water authorities and integrated water resource management. We have experience in Benin, Burundi, DR Congo, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Philippines, Serbia, Sudan, South Africa, South Sudan, Ukraine, Uganda.

Our approach is task-orientated and integrated, accompanying local government partners with our local government and governance expertise in related to their mandate, roles and responsibilities in specific societal climate and water related issues, complementary to other actors (water and environmental authorities, cadastre, engineering companies, financing institutions, knowledge institutions, NGOs and CBOs).

VNG International tries to make a difference through supporting good governance and we do so by working on three intervention areas: Improved decision-marking, processes, policies & services; Improved leadership and citizenship; improved mandate.  Some examples of strengths of VNG International related to water: maintenance and sustainability of water points/infrastructure, capacity building of local governments, capacity building of utilities in disaster risk management around water, strategy development in local/regional water management, awareness creation: pricing of water, role of local government and communities in water management, stakeholder coordination and donor coordination, as well as community engagement in flood/disaster response.
