VNG International expresses its support the Libyan people after storm Daniel swept into Libya. Thousands have lost their lives and thousands of people are currently missing, as a catastrophic flood swept away entire neigbourhoods of the eastern Libyan city of Derna.

We at VNG International are deeply saddened by the devastating impact of the storm and floods in Libya, a country where we have worked since 2012 supporting their democratic transition through reinforced local governments. Our hearts go out to the thousands of people who have been affected by this tragedy. During these times of hardship, it is crucial to stand in solidarity with the people of Libya, whose resilience and strength has been tested by this disaster – and has been for a long time by the ongoing political uncertainties. We aspire that the wave of solidarity among Libyans facing this tragedy  will pave the way for union and stability.

As we express our sympathy, we also see with concern how natural risks linked to climate change are increasingly endangering the Mediterranean region. Enabling municipalities to assess environmental risks and prepare for and deal with disasters will be crucial in order to protect those in the region.

VNG International, in collaboration with the international community, is committed to supporting local governments in Libya in their recovery effort.
