Programme Objective:

The TRIDE project aims to improve food security and integrated water resource management in 137 villages of 8 chefferies in North and South Kivu. In addition to promoting good governance at the local level, with a view to addressing the root causes of inter-ethnic conflicts, problems of insecurity (armed groups) and other forms of harassment for a harmonious and sustainable development of the local economy will also be aspects of the project.

The project will be implemented in the following targeted areas:

  • North Kivu Province: Masisi Territoire (Bashali and Bahunde chefferies) and Rutshuru Territory (Bwisha and Bwito chefferies)
  • South Kivu Province: Kalehe Territoire (Buhavu and Buloho chefferies) and Uvira Territoire (Bafuliiru and Ruzizi Plain chefferies)

The project seeks to achieve the following objective:
Mitigate insecurity and instability by promoting local economic development through integrated water resource management, value chain development and improved access to land and markets.

The results sought by the project are as follows:

  • Result 1: Access and security of land tenure by smallholders is improved to reduce land-related conflicts
  • Result 2: Integrated Water Resources Management is strengthened to promote resilient agricultural systems in North and South Kivu
  • Result 3: Local economy is revitalized through inclusive development and profitable value chains and the market system (MSD).

TRIDE is a bottom-up approach that builds the capacity of community members for greater resourcefulness and empowerment. Similarly, this project will scale up various lessons learned during the implementation of previous projects in the intervention area.

Activities:

  • Project design and implementation
  • Selection and contracting of international and local experts
  • Financial and implementation quality control and guarantee
  • Support government technical services at territoire level in the development of land use plans and specific development plans for the project’s intervention zones
  • Support in drawing up draft decrees/edicts or regulatory acts defining the regime for operating contracts for concessions that are not used or are insufficiently occupied
  • Organise capacity building workshops for community structures in land tenure and inter-ethnic conflict transformation techniques
  • Update local development plans of ETDs to integrate the PIP approach and local economy development aspects
  • Develop an L&A strategy and conduct L&A actions at both provincial and local levels for promulgation of IWRM and resilient agriculture policies
  • Strengthen actors involved in the security sector as well as those of civil society on security incidents monitoring and evaluation techniques
  • Drawing up security action plans (PAS) for the target groupements in accordance with the territorial security action plans drawn up by the ESPER project
  • Support the groupement CLS (Local security committee) in improving security environment with the help of the Territory, chefferie levels (ESPER)
  • Carry out advocacy actions with the security services at national and provincial level for the dismantling of barriers and other forms of harassment (involving administrative and judicial mechanisms to sanction local authorities involved in administrative, police and military
  • Supporting the establishment of services to support the development of value chains at ETD level (e.g. communication ; legal services ; drawing up ETD budgets together with economic operators, civil society & cooperatives).
