SDLG Lebanon empowers local authorities to address conflict drivers, manage diverse populations, generate revenue, and improve service delivery, fostering sustainable futures for all community members amid national challenges. 

Objective

The SDLG Lebanon programme aims to strengthen local governance in a complex context, enabling local authorities to shape better futures for host and displaced communities alike. It seeks to empower municipalities to address conflict drivers in a non-violent and inclusive manner, manage diverse populations, and catalyse local economic development through improved revenue generation. Additionally, the programme supports local authorities and their representative bodies in delivering policies that ensure healthy, safe, and socially equitable lives for all. By enhancing governance processes and service delivery, SDLG Lebanon aims to improve local leadership and foster active participation from various social groups in shaping their communities’ futures. 

Approach

The SDLG Lebanon programme employs a multi-faceted approach to strengthen local governance. It implements sustainable solid waste management systems coupled with revenue-generating schemes to boost financial sustainability. Active Citizenships Labs are established to empower civil society groups and promote inclusive governance, addressing potential conflict drivers. The programme also focuses on updating digital infrastructure to enhance municipal management and service delivery efficiency. Capacity building initiatives target local leaders and administrators, emphasizing inclusive management of diverse populations and effective policy implementation. The approach prioritizes the inclusion of women and youth in local governance through targeted training. Throughout, the programme fosters networking and learning alliances to address pressing municipal issues and promote sustainable community development.

Results

The programme has several key outcomes. These include enhanced digital infrastructure for improved municipal operations, established sustainable waste management systems, increased civic engagement, and strengthened capacity of municipal council members. The programme also aims to boost representation of women and youth in local governance, foster stronger intermunicipal networks, and improve inclusive service delivery for all community members. Ultimately, the SDLG Lebanon programme strives to maintain social cohesion in challenging circumstances while enhancing the overall effectiveness and inclusivity of local governance structures.
