SDLG Lebanon empowers local authorities to address conflict drivers, manage diverse populations, strengthen local economies and improve service delivery, contributing to more stable and inclusive communities in a challenging national context.

Objective

The SDLG Lebanon programme supports municipalities in improving conditions for both host and displaced communities. It helps local authorities prevent and manage conflict in inclusive and non-violent ways, while enabling them to respond to increasingly diverse populations. The programme also contributes to local economic development by improving municipalities’ capacity to generate revenue.

In addition, SDLG Lebanon works with local authorities and their representative bodies to develop and implement policies that promote safe, healthy and fair living conditions. By improving governance processes and supporting local leadership, the programme creates more opportunities for residents to take part in shaping their communities.

Approach

SDLG Lebanon employs a multi-faceted approach. It implements sustainable solid waste management systems coupled with revenue-generating schemes to boost financial sustainability. Active ‘Citizenships Labs’ are established to empower civil society groups and promote inclusive governance, addressing potential conflict drivers.

The programme also improves digital systems to make municipal management and service delivery more efficient. Training and coaching are provided to municipal leaders and staff, with a strong focus on inclusive governance and managing diversity. Specific activities support greater participation by women and youth in local decision-making.

Throughout the programme, municipalities are encouraged to share experiences and learn from each other through networks and learning alliances focused on common challenges.

Results

The programme has several key outcomes, these include:

  • Improved digital systems for municipal management and services.
  • More sustainable solid waste management systems.
  • Higher levels of civic participation.
  • Stronger skills and capacity among municipal council members.

The programme also aims to boost representation of women and youth in local governance, foster stronger intermunicipal networks, and improve inclusive service delivery for all community members. Ultimately, the SDLG Lebanon programme strives to maintain social cohesion in challenging circumstances while enhancing the overall effectiveness and inclusivity of local governance structures.
