The Executive Board of the VNG has appointed Renske Steenbergen as Director of VNG International from 1 July. She succeeds Pieter Jeroense, who will take up the role of General Director of the VNG from 1 October 2026. Steenbergen has served as Deputy Director and Acting Director of VNG International since 2022.
The past years Steenbergen has provided strong and steady leadership, guiding the organisation and its international work with clarity and commitment. Her appointment ensures continuity in VNG International’s mission to strengthen local governments worldwide as the foundation for stable, resilient and inclusive societies.
Jeroense says that VNG International remains in trusted hands. “Over the past period, Renske has shown that she leads VNG International with vision and conviction. She combines strategic insight with a strong commitment to our international work. I am therefore very pleased that she is taking on this role and have full confidence that she will further strengthen the organisation and our impact.”
Working closely with municipalities, associations and partners across the world, VNG International supports local governments in delivering essential services, strengthening governance and building resilience in often complex and fragile contexts. This international collaboration remains at the heart of the organisation’s approach and impact.
Steenbergen looks forward to taking on the role and building on the work developed in recent years. “Together with our colleagues and our many partners around the world, we will continue to strengthen municipalities in their vital role at the heart of society. Especially in times of global uncertainty, investing in strong local governance is key to creating stability, security and opportunity. I look forward to deepening our partnerships and building on the results we achieve together.”
With Steenbergen’s appointment, VNG International continues its work with municipalities and partners worldwide to strengthen local governance in practice.
