2020 United Nations High-Level Political Forum

7 – 16 July 2020, Local and Regional Government’s Agenda

The 2020 United Nations High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on sustainable development will be held from Tuesday 7 July, to Thursday 16 July 2020, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. This year's theme is "Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development " and, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, all events will be held virtually.

We are happy to inform you that for the first time, the UCLG President will intervene at the formal opening of the HLPF on 7 July on behalf of the non-member states constituencies. The delegation of local and regional governments will be composed by over 100 delegates from which 40 are political representatives.

Below we provided the key moments for the Local and Regional Governments delegation during the UN High Level Political Forum. You are welcome to virtually attend the Local and Regional Governments sessions if desired.

In addition to the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, CEMR/PLATFORMA would like to share some information with you:

  • A session dedicated to the Launch of the UCLG UN-Habitat Guidelines for Voluntary Local Reviews will take place on July 8 (16.00 – 18.00 CEST). Would you be interested to participate as a speaker, please let us know by Monday 6 July (COB); we will then propose your names to UN Habitat and UCLG. Elected representatives who have or are in the process of doing a Voluntary Local Review are warmly welcome.
  • A UCLG Dialogue with the World Health Organisation called “Acting for Universal Coverage” organised by UCLG, will take place on 15 July (Time TBD). Would you be interested to be participate as a speaker, please let us know by Monday 6 July (COB); we will then propose your names to UCLG.

UCLG and UN Habitat: VLR Series Launch
8 July 10.00 – 12.00 (held New York Time)
 
This launch event session will be presenting the first volume of Guidelines for VLRs of the VLR Series jointly developed by UCLG and UN-Habitat and will showcase the importance that VLRs play not only in monitoring and evaluating progress towards the SDGs but also in contributing towards multilevel governance and the transformation necessary to achieve just, resilient, and sustainable cities, territories, and societies that guarantee protection to all citizens during and beyond times of crisis.

Local and Regional Governments Day
10 July 6:30 – 11:30 (held New York Time)


UCLG, on behalf of the GTF, is convening a dedicated event of the organized constituency of local and regional governments at the HLPF. The objective of the LRG Day is to bring together the whole delegation of local and regional governments to discuss and agree on the constituency's Statement to the HLPF; reinforce linkages with partners from the UN, civil society, and other stakeholders; and define the priorities of the constituency for the decade of action.

Local and Regional Governments Forum

The GTF will be co-organizing the third edition of the Local and Regional Governments’ Forum with UN DESA, UN-Habitat, UNDP and the Executive Office of the UN Secretary General. The overall objective of the Local and Regional Governments Forum is to produce a fruitful debate and strong commitments from local and regional governments, national authorities and the international community to support a transformative bottom-up process grounded on multilevel governance based on the achievement of the SDGs in the aftermath of the COVID19 crisis, while contributing to the Decade of Action.

Dialogue between UCLG and UHC2030
14 July 07.30-09.00 (held New York Time)
 
Co-organized with the WHO, the session will aim at envisioning the future of health services and the critical role that local governments can play to ensure that no-one is left behind in our communities, ensuring the link between science and policymaking in regards to healthcare, and protecting those that need it the most as well as the public servants that take care of us. The format will be an open dialogue between our constituency and experts and high-level health authorities.

UN call for acceleration actions
 
As part of the UN Secretary-General’s Decade of Action for SDG implementation, the UN has put forward the SDG Acceleration Actions online database. This platform seeks to gather and mobilize actions to Build Back Better in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
