In 2019, experts of VNG International visited Thanintharyi, Myanmar to perform a field visit on local revenue mobilisation. The objective was to assess what role property tax currently plays in revenue mobilisation and what role it potentially could play, now that the Myanmar government is engaged in a movement of creating more transparency and accountability on their public finances. The field visit was part of the MAGIC project: Municipal Accountability, Governance, and Inclusive Communities. To work with our local partners and Myanmar government officials was a truly MAGICal experience, and it convinced us that there is momentum and opportunity for working together on improving administrative capacity, transparency and accountability of the tax ecosystem in Myanmar.
