Group photoThe first IDEAL advisory board of 2019 took place on Thursday April 11th. The meeting was chaired by  Mr Carol van Eert, mayor of Rheden and member of the VNG Commission ‘Europe and International’. Rheden is one of the Dutch municipalities involved in the IDEAL programme. The Advisory Board furthermore consists of representatives from the field, research institutes, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as experts on local governance and fragility. During this day the project teams of all 7 IDEAL countries (Burundi, Mali, Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Somaliland, South Sudan and Uganda) reflected on their annual reports of 2018. After each presentation there was plenty of time to discuss the questions of the IDEAL team and the comments of the advisory board, which brought about some interesting conversations about key topics for the IDEAL programme.

IDEAL is a programme implemented in seven countries facing fragility or conflict: Burundi, Mali, Palestine, Rwanda, Somaliland, South Sudan and Uganda. Local governments play a key role in supporting the resilience of their communities against instability and fragility. The basic services local governments provide and the policies they develop have a direct effect on the lives of citizens. IDEAL works on involving citizens, including in particular marginalised groups, in local decision-making in order to ensure their needs and opinions are reflected. This will in first instance improve local governance and the quality of basic services, and in the long-term increase security, reduce poverty, and lead to sustainable social and economic development.
