WTHE MUNICIPALITY OF SÚDWEST-FRYSLÂN – FROM THINKING GLOBALLY TO ACTING LOCALLY

Súdwest-Fryslân is taking joint steps in this regard. The SDG compass from the Environmental Vision 1.0 ('Omgevingsvisie 1.0'), among other things, serves as a guide. In addition to themes, the compass also provides tools for translating the Global Goals into daily policy and municipal activities. Take the creation of the Regional Energy Strategy ('Regionale Energiestrategie', RES), for example. In Bolsward, the starting point for this was the idea that 'no one should be left behind' in making the housing supply more sustainable. There are more currently active projects and initiatives that are part of the SDG theme 'Healthy vital people in a healthy and safe environment' from the compass, such as the handyman bank in Stavoren, Operation Steenbreek in which the public space is made greener and several pilots in the field of living in a dementia-friendly way or combating poverty.

“The world is currently facing major challenges. Many aspects that determine the quality of life are, partly because of the pandemic, affecting decision-making procedures even more than before. Broad prosperity and the inextricable achievement of the Global Goals is more relevant than ever for the Netherlands! Local governments are the policymakers, catalysts of change and the level of government best situated to link global goals to what needs to be done locally.”
- Mark de Man, Alderman Súdwest-Fryslân

  • With colleagues: In addition to the above, the impact from the Environmental Vision 1.0 also takes place via area visions and environmental programmes. A recent example is the environmental programme Climate Adaptation ('Klimaatadaptatie').

  • With education: Three students from NHL Stenden are working with us on the project ‘Inspiration requested by and for the future’ for the Minor Sustainable Society.

  • With the council: Exploratory talks were held with the council about the SDG Netwurk Fryslân and based on the Broad Prosperity indicators ('Brede Welvaart Indicatoren'), Súdwest-Fryslân has become a focus.

  • With the ‘mienskip’: In Súdwest-Fryslân we already take into account the Global Goals when making plans. This goes beyond just making plans in the town hall. From 'ús mienskip', there are many initiatives that contribute to this. This makes the Global Goals achievable.

Working on the Global Goals is a matter of continuously identifying, connecting and grasping integral opportunities

Working together on our healty living environment

Municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân. More than 89,000 Frisians, 89 centres. A colourful area between Sneek, Stavoren and the Afsluitdijk. Unique because of the expansive landscape and the beautiful water. Rich in cultural history. Súdwest-Fryslân belongs to us all. We live here, work here and spend our leisure time here. We prefer to do this in a pleasant and healthy environment. We are working on this together.

Environmental vision based on the Global Goals
All Global Goals are directly or indirectly related to daily work. The goals are based on an integrated approach in which the physical, social and economic aspects of sustainability are in balance. That is why Súdwest-Fryslân took part in a practical trial by the VNG that links up with the Dutch Environmental Vision. Súdwest-Fryslân uses the 17 Global Goals as an assessment framework, not only when drawing up the Environmental Vision, but also when "bringing the Environmental Vision to life". The process of programming asset management is therefore linked to this.

"An inspiring action perspective for all of us!"

Pushing forward with energy
Súdwest-Fryslân wants to mean more for Europe. The ambition to be more European is the result of the 2018-2022 outline agreement, “Súdwest-Fryslân develops and becomes more sustainable”. For example, a Position paper Europe has been prepared; see also the "Ambition talk sheet" below. And in the Framework Memorandum 2020 the link is made to the Sustainable Development Goals.
