DUIVEN CONNECTS ALL INTERNATIONAL CONTACTS WITH EACH OTHER

Global GoalsIn 2019, the municipality of Duiven organised a municipal network meeting for the first time in which the connection was made between all authorities in the field of sustainability and international contacts within the municipality. The aim is to make this an annual networking day in Duiven. During the successful meeting, plans were set out about the process to connect the municipality as a Fairtrade municipality. The twinning activities related to the partnership between Duiven and the German city of Gemünden am Main were also explained. The involvement of education was central to this. The foundation Alvan Tsarik in Duiven also links students within the municipality to students in Armenia. In addition to Global Goal 4, "Quality Education", being highlighted, there were also councillors present who discussed themes linked to sustainability and international projects, partnerships and exchanges. The municipality is also focusing on Global Goal 2 "Zero Hunger", Global Goal 13 "Climate Action", and Global Goal 17 "Partnership for the Goals".
The result of this 1st municipal network meeting is that the organisations have (further) become acquainted with each other and work is being done to draw up a joint international calendar for 2020 based on the Global Goals, to which everyone can contribute. The Fairtrade initiatives are also further developed within this international calendar. The organisations will establish more mutual connections.

"The municipality of Duiven connects, stimulates and facilitates international contacts and the community organises"
- Rik de Lange, Mayor of the municipality of Duiven

For many years now, the municipality of Duiven has maintained international friendships and organised many international exchanges. However, there was no cohesion and the annual network day in the context of the Global Goals is an excellent opportunity to create cohesion and connection. It concerns the following contacts.

  • Gemünden am Main Foundation Twinning Committee
Several exchanges are organised every year to implement the friendship agreement with the municipality of Gemünden am Main in Germany. This has been happening for more than 30 years.
  • Fair trade municipality in de Liemers
A few years ago, attempts were made to make the Duiven, Westervoort and Zevenaar municipalities Fairtrade municipalities. The World shop in Duiven has disappeared. This dormant initiative is being revived in the context of the Global Goals.
  • The Connect to Share Foundation and the municipality of Duiven as a Millennium Municipality.
To this end, Duiven has joined the VNG Millennium Municipalities in the past. Initiatives are honoured that contribute to the realisation of the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. The implementation of the millennium goals has been placed with the Connect to Share Foundation. By putting an autonomous foundation in charge of making a contribution to the realisation of these goals, it is also possible to tap external subsidy sources.

In addition to the international contacts mentioned above, formalised by the municipality, the municipality also has a number of other international partnerships:

  • HOPE XXL International
HOPE XXL strives for a world in which everyone values his or her life as "good", so by scoring it an eight or higher. That is why HOPE XXL has developed a new vision of the future with young people from all over the world. This vision, called the Liemers List, was presented to the United Nations in February 2015.
  • Initiatives Rotary club Duiven in the field of youth and international contacts.
  • Social internships (international) Candea College Duiven (secondary education).
