One third of all Dutch municipalities is now Millennium Municipality! - 09-03-10
With the municipality of Bergen becoming the 144th Millennium Municipality one-third of all Dutch municipalities is now participating in the Millennium Municipality Campaign and 51 percent of the Dutch population is living in a Millennium Municipality. The campaign, which started in 2007, is dedicated to achieving the UN millennium goals by developing activities on a local level.
In the spirit of the "Millennium Towns and Cities Campaign" of United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG) launched its "Millennium Municipality" – or in Dutch "Millennium Gemeente" – campaign in 2007.
The VNG campaign has a very specific approach to mobilize the municipalities and to offer assistance. Read more about this approach in the brochure on VNG's Millennium Municipality Campaign.
