On the 30th of April, VNG International organises two events in the light of its Millennium Municipality campaign.
The Millennium Municipality campaignwas launched on 11 April 2007 and its goal is to contribute to accomplishing the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). VNG International executes this project on behalf of the Dutch Association of Municipalities (VNG) and supports Dutch Millennium Municipalities and their inhabitants with the development of a sustainable and a firmly-embedded campaign. Currently 160 Dutch municipalities are officially Millennium Municipalities.
Firstly, VNG International organises a seminar ‘Think Global, Act Local!’, which will be held on April 30 in Media Plaza (Utrecht). The MDGs come to an end by the end of 2015. Working on a common development agenda with joint forces has brought us a lot. Nevertheless, life goes on; not all goals were accomplished and there are many remaining challenges. During this seminar we will look back on what has been achieved and look forward to the future of the Millennium Municipality campaign together with Mayors, aldermen, councilmen and other interested people. Among the speakers are Mr Jan Terlouw (former politician and sustainability guru), Mr Christiaan Rebergen (Director-General International Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Ms Hanna Makoba (Mayor of the South-African municipality of Camdeboo) and Ms Marloes Borsboom (alderman of Rijswijk and member of the VNG Commission Europe and International). For more information and registration, please take a look at theevent’s webpage.
Furthermore, the final of the contest ‘Do-gooder of the Year!’ will be held directly after the seminar, also in Media Plaza in Utrecht. This is a contest for Dutch high school pupils on doing good for the people and planet, in the light of the Millennium Goals. Three initiatives have been selected finalists: the projects of Britt (16), Eline (15) and Sanne (16), and Guido (10) and Jesse (11). You can stillvote, until the day of the final 10 o’clock. Furthermore, this event is open for all and free of charge. Please sign up here if you would like to attend the finals.
